Nine Chronicles: An Open-Sourced Online Play-to-Earn RPG

Role Playing Games are, by their very nature, time-intensive affairs. They’re far more complex than your typical run and gun games, requiring players to comprehend and use deeper systems which in turn draws them deeper into their vast realms. Nine Chronicles is a fully decentralized RPG where players can play, mine and govern together. Let’s see if this game will appeal to fantasy-loving gamers and be worth sinking your time into.

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

Nine Chronicles is a free-to-play, play-to-earn RPG without servers— like Bitcoin or BitTorrent, having gamers and miners connect to power a distributed game network. This project is published by Planetarium Labs and is being developed by Nine Corporation. The decentralized fantasy world of Nine Chronicles is backed by major players including Ubisoft, Animoca Brands, Binance Labs, Krust, among others. Also having prominent advisors such as Jihoz himself, the co-founder of Axie infinity.

Currently, the game is already out to the public and as for 2022 players should expect major updates to revamp Nine Chronicles’ economy with long term growth potential for both players and the network.

GAMEPLAY SUMMARY

Nine Chronicles is a decentralized fantasy world where players will make their way through a campaign mode that currently has 250 unique stages spread across different realms. First, everything begins in character creation, Nine Chronicles has kept things simple with streamlined options and other presets. But if you’re not satisfied with it, you can choose to customize your character’s hair, eyes, ear and tail type. Each character will also have attributes that will be beneficial in the battlefield. These character attributes include hit points, attack power, defense power, critical attacks, and speed.

There are four different activities available that the player can do in-game:

  • Campaign- (PvE) This is where players will face several fierce opponents in a deadly battle that gets more difficult as the game progresses.
  • Arena- (PvP) Players will engage in a battle with another player. Whoever wins will get rewarded materials that can be used to craft items.
  • Blacksmith- This is where players can craft and upgrade items to either wear or sell. There are 4 different items – Equipment is used during battles, Consumables are used to improve chances of success as it provides buffs like power up, Materials can be used to craft, Costumes & Titles are the cosmetic items that only change the appearance of the character.
  •  Market- Players can sell what they’ve crafted but trading will only unlock after level 17.

EARNING POTENTIAL

The game uses Nine Chronicles Gold ($NGC) as the sole currency. Aside from playing and winning, players may also earn this token by mining. To mine, players just need to have their launchers running. Another way to earn is to stake and participate in Nine Chronicle’s P2E events like battling other players in arena-style challenges where the top 500 players each week are given financial incentives.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Nine Chronicles is a fully decentralized RPG that’s run by its players. It looks like it really empowers individual gamers in a way that a decentralized world can allow. Moreover, the fact that Nine Chronicles boasts an impressive earning potential of as much as $50 per day has definitely helped generate buzz around it. Although most of the concepts in Nine Chronicles have been seen before, this project is not handled by a team of part-time game developers or fresh faces to the scene. What I like about this project is that Ubisoft, one of the biggest game companies, is actively backing this project. Bringing with it an immense level of expertise and network connections.

Based on the game videos I’ve seen; Nine Chronicles has quite an impressive fantasy universe that is filled with imaginative beasts and original characters. Nine Chronicles is visually interesting, that’s why it hurt my soul after finding out that it plays automatically. The game is mostly an idle one – there are no skills or assignable stats after leveling up as you would expect in an RPG. In this game, you can only change your gear setup and add some buffs. You’re just a spectator in a fight.

For me, the joy of RPG comes in being able to lord over enemies then destroying them and knowing it’s all your work. Idle RPGs can’t do that, it’s more of only the barest satisfaction by just watching everything playout. But from the many successful idle games out there, it’s clear that these kinds of games are still striking a chord with players. While this game may not be for me, you can still  try out Nine Chronicles for yourself and see if this idle game can be the ideal game.
