Who hasn’t thought of how exactly they’d survive the zombie apocalypse before? What building to fortify, what weapons you’d utilize, who would you trust? Tack on some fast-paced parkour action while blasting away until your enemies are reduced to pulp? Well, crack those knuckles and get ready to make some headshots as I introduce Polygonum, a free-to-play play-to-earn shooter survival game.

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

Marcius Studio, a company renowned for its work on mobile and online apps is creating Polygonum Online in Binance Smart Chain. Polygonum is a 3D open-world shooter that runs on a Free-to-Play system with earning features. DAO Maker, Red Kite, GameFi, Icetea Labs, Gate.io, and others are all supporting the project. Currently, the game has already released their Alpha 3 on both PC and Mac with an alpha mobile version on android planned for Q3 2022.

GAMEPLAY SUMMARY

The beginning of the game's narrative occurs after a disease has killed half of humanity. Players will take on the role of survivors and partake in global exploration. Polygonum has each game mode fit into a big map that is separated into three zones. The whole map has various buildings, NPCs, vehicles, equipment, and weapons. The 3 main zones in the game offer their own activities and functions.

FARM ZONE

There are no hostile players or combatants in this part of the game. Here, players may craft resources, enhance their current items, and store their stuff for free. This area contains the NFT and NPC Marketplaces. In addition to all of this, players may create their own island or farm to enjoy with friends.

PVE ZONE

This is a slightly more open zone when compared to the Farm Zone. Players in this area are going to engage in a clash against enemies such as zombies and wild animals, the value of the loot depends on the enemy level. The PVE zone is also where players can mine ores and extract resources such as stone, wood and plants. 

PVP ZONE

In PVP, players will come across various opponents like zombies, bosses, and other players as well. Receiving rewards for killing other players. Moreover, loot and resources you’ll find in this zone will be more rare than in PVE. 

EARNING POTENTIAL

Polygonum has a dual token system. The POG coin and the Skill Point (SP). POG coin is the governance token used for market trading, upgrading items, and staking purposes. Meanwhile, SP is used as the in-game currency of the game. Players can earn this by completing quests, owning farms and PvP zone survival.

Players can earn money in Polygonum in different ways. If they don’t want to focus too much on the gameplay, they can do NFT trading by using POG coins. On the other hand, the player can earn SP by playing the game through winning in PvP and selling collected resources.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Polygonum reminds me of a lot of other games because of the various different activities. Having familiar gameplay like “Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds” (PUBG) since the goal of the game is for the players to survive as long as they can while also looting the place. Polygonum also reminds me of “Fortnite” in a way that both of them have this fantastic blend of shooting and building. It’s also similar to “My Neighbor Alice” because both of these games feature an island where the players can build their own farm and earn tokens. All the hunting, mining, and crafting in Polygonum reminds me of “Rust.” It’s a familiar blend of everything with a smooth integration of each game's mechanics.  

Based on what I’ve seen from videos, I can say that Polygonum is quite a solid game. The visuals didn’t come in a hyper realistic gore package but it offers a unique cartoony aesthetic instead. It looks dated and a bit silly at first for an FPS survival game but I think it’s a strategy to lull players into a false sense of security that everything will just be downright cute because once you shoot at anyone, you’ll be surprised that there will be no lack of blood in this game. This 3D shooter game surely piqued my interest and if you’re a fan of apocalypse action-adventure games then it's only fitting to look out for this one.
